What Is +P Ammo? (+P and +P+ Explained)
March 14, 2026 · AmmoBin.com
You'll see '+P' on some defensive ammo boxes. It signals higher pressure — and more velocity — but it's not for every gun. Here's what it means.
What +P means
+P ("plus pressure") ammo is loaded to a higher chamber pressure than standard SAAMI spec, producing more velocity and energy. +P+ is even hotter and is not a formally standardized rating, so treat it cautiously.
Is it safe in your gun?
Only fire +P in a firearm rated for it — check the manual or manufacturer. +P increases recoil and wear; +P+ should only be used if the maker explicitly approves it. When unsure, stick to standard-pressure ammo.
When it's worth it
+P can give defensive loads a modest performance edge, common in 9mm and .38 Special. For practice, standard-pressure FMJ is cheaper and softer-shooting — see FMJ vs JHP.
Frequently asked questions
Is +P ammo safe to shoot?
Only in firearms rated for +P — check your manual. It produces more pressure, velocity, recoil, and wear. +P+ is non-standard and should only be used with the maker's explicit approval.
Is +P worth it for self-defense?
It offers a modest velocity/energy edge in defensive loads. It's worth it if your gun is rated for it and you can still shoot it accurately.
